RCS vs SMS: which should your business send?

SMS sends plain text, up to 160 characters per segment, to almost any mobile phone over the carrier network. RCS (Rich Communication Services) is the GSMA standard that upgrades business texts with your verified brand name and logo, images, carousels, tap-to-reply buttons and read receipts, all inside the phone's default messaging app. When a phone can't receive RCS, the message falls back to SMS, so most businesses send both.

RCS vs SMS at a glance

The two channels reach the same messaging inbox. What changes is what the message can hold, who it appears to come from and what the customer can do with it.

The same alert, sent two ways

Here is one fraud alert from a fictional bank. The facts are identical. The RCS version shows who sent it, puts the details in a card and turns the reply into buttons.

Pros and cons of RCS and SMS

Neither channel replaces the other. Each one is better at a different job.

Where SMS still wins

  • Reach

SMS lands on nearly every mobile phone, with no app, data plan or upgrade required.

  • Short, urgent texts

One-time passcodes, outage notices and delivery windows need no design. They need to arrive.

  • A safety net

SMS is what RCS falls back to, so every RCS program still runs on a reliable SMS route.

Where RCS pulls ahead

  • Trust

Your name, logo and a verification check mark replace an unknown number, which makes impersonation harder to pull off.

  • Action in the thread

Buttons let customers confirm, pay, reschedule or call without typing or leaving the app.

  • Measurement

Read receipts and button taps show what happened after delivery, not only that the message arrived.

  • Room to explain

Up to 3,072 characters plus images, video and carousels fit in one message instead of several segments.

Does RCS work on iPhone?

Yes, with conditions. Apple added RCS to iPhone with iOS 18 in September 2024 for person-to-person chats, then opened it to business messages with iOS 18.1.

Whether a given iPhone receives your RCS message still depends on its iOS version and on the carrier enabling RCS for Business in that market. Anyone who can't receive it gets the message as SMS or MMS instead, so you don't need to split your audience by device.

How RCS and SMS are billed

SMS is billed per segment: every 160 characters, or 70 with emoji, counts as another message.

In the US, carriers set RCS prices. Google's US model splits RCS into two types. A Rich Message (text, suggested replies, and call or link buttons) is counted in 160-byte segments, much like SMS. A Rich Media Message (any card, carousel, image or video) is one flat-rate charge, whatever its length or number of cards. Outside the US, short text, rich messages and 24-hour conversations are billed as separate events.
